Exoloring Ecuador's Extreme Biodiversity

Join us on a 2-part wildlife adventure through Ecuador’s capital, across the Andes Mountains, and deep into the Amazon River Basin to explore unique environments few often visit. First, our small group journeys by car, plane, boat, and canoe far into the remote jungle to a luxury wilderness lodge situated on a black water lagoon in the heart of Ecuador’s largest protected area.

Our forest accommodation offers unique acess to nature while also providing premium amenities in some of the furthest reaches of the country. We spend 5 nights photographing everywhere from the treetops to the riverbanks in one of the most biodiverse regions on earth. This wilderness area is regarded as an “ecological bull’s-eye”; a complex network of tropical forests and converging river ways. Led by a team of professional outdoor photographers and trusted local guides with extensive experience in the region, this workshop takes you on forest walks, canoe rides, up to the forest canopy on observation decks, to water holes, known nesting sites, clay licks, and much more for a fully comprehensive exploration of the terrain.

Just one hectare of the forest boasts more than 650 different tree species, more than all of the tree species found in North America. That incredible habitat offers a lifeline to spectacular species like tayra, jaguar, tamarin, sloth, ocelot, capybara, marmoset, agouti, tapir, giant otter, peccary, tamandua, coati, giant armadillo, caiman, a variety of monkeys, bats, frogs, and many other amphibians and reptiles. In fact, this small region is home to approximately one-third of amphibian and reptile species found in the entire Amazon Basin.

We share the forests and waterways with many indigenous communities that have long called this river basin their home. These are hunter gatherer tribes entirely depend on the longevity of the ecosystem, and for visitors to educate themselves on conservation efforts in the Amazon, thus, we partner with local naturalists and guides to bring us closer to these communities for rare cultural experiences only given to those who journey deep into these ancient forests.

Bird-lovers will also rejoice in the record numbers of unique birds found across the country in regions we’ve arranged to visit. With more than 1,680 different species of birds, Ecuador is one of the most popular destinations in the world for birdwatchers. Our first destination alone is home to at least 596 bird species which comprises one-third of the total native bird species for the Amazon.

On the 7th day of our workshop, our group transitions locations, and the fun is just beginning! After one rest evening in Quito, the group sets out by private vehicle for a 4 day birding excursion in the Andean Rainforest. We arrive at a new forest lodge which caters to wildlife photographers.

The region’s 260 mm monthly rainfall creates an incredible habitat for species big and small. Together, we explore the mountainsides of the Andes from 1640 feet – 11,155 feet to explore the diverse wildlife there. The lush environment offers dynamic opportunities to photograph stunning wildlife subjects, like toucans, macaws, monkeys, tree frogs, and massive amounts of hummingbirds from a variety of vantage points like lodge balconies, walking trails, canopy viewing towers, and designated pollinator gardens with spaces dedicated for photographers to work with the environment and capture the scene. During this portion of the trip, we dedicate time to shoot Andean cock-of-the-rock up-close, as well as multi-flash hummingbird photo shoots to practice high shutter photography techniques.

Throughout the workshop, you will learn how to compose compelling images, work with the weather and lighting conditions to take full advantage of the environment, learn about the culture you’re visiting, and master the technical aspects of photography. Whether you’re a beginner photographer or a seasoned pro, our experienced instructors will provide personalized instruction and guidance to help you improve your skills and take your wildlife and landscape photography to the next level.

This workshop offers in-the-field instruction to best hone in your images and streamline your creative visions, as well as post-workshop image reviews and editing sessions to continue practicing skills and techniques learned on the workshop once you’ve returned home.

What Sets our workshops apart

We believe in order to truly enjoy your experience, and to receive the most out of an adventure photography workshop, we must maintain small group sizes with a very high ratio of instructors to participants. We’ve limited this workshop to a maximum of 8 participants and 2 instructors so everyone has an optimal view from inside our boats and other watercraft.

This is a unique educational excursion, and by capping the group size, despite immense interest, our team ensures everyone gets the attention and one-on-one instruction they need to make once in a lifetime images.

Our workshops are distinctive in that they’re fully inclusive– your tuition cost covers all expenses from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart Ecuador. We provide our guests the best possible accommodations, dining options, and unique educational opportunities in the region.

As workshop leaders, we take your trust in our expertise very seriously. We work in tandem with the respective National Park Service, indigenous communities, or governing bodies of any photo locations, and always operate under the proper insurance, permits, and certifications.

What you will learn

You will be accompanied by Juan Pons and Jaclyn Merica during this workshop. Juan is an accomplished professional wildlife and travel photographer and photographic educator with a deep passion for the outdoors and conservation. Jaclyn has served as Juan’s assistant for the last 5 years, co-leading outdoor workshops in places like Yellowstone, the Himalayas, Botswana, Madagascar, Patagonia, and more.

Our team believes the best way to teach is by demonstrating, and to this end, we will be shooting alongside you, showing you our technique, and sharing our love and knowledge of the wildlife and landscape. However, our priority is always YOU, and assisting you in capturing your best images possible.

The biggest advantage of having a small group is the flexibility they provide for customizing and adjusting our schedule to accommodate both to the unpredictable weather and the interests of the group as a whole. This allows us to cover only those topics that you are all interested in, including:

• Techniques for creating exciting and captivating wildlife images

• Best use of your equipment

• Post-processing demos to enhance the quality of your images

• Image reviews

What to expect

Our workshops are fairly intensive experiences, and you should not expect this to be a leisurely vacation. Our goal is to capture the best images we can during our time in this remarkable location. This means there will be days we begin very early and return to our lodging very late. However, we will often have breaks and lunch rest hours.

On this workshop, you will fly into and out of Quito, Ecuador (Airport code UIO). You should expect to receive important instructions from us to secure your flight reservations 6 months prior to the workshop

Then, about 2-3 months prior to the workshop, you will start hearing from us on a regular basis. We will provide you with a Workshop Participant Info Packet with all relevant details, as well as go over more info regarding the workshop to get you inspired and thinking about the images you want to capture during the workshop. These provided documents will list all recommended clothing, equipment, and even discounts for gear you may want to acquire for this excursion.

Pre-departure group zoom conference

Juan and Jaclyn are always available to answer any questions you may have leading up to the excursion- simply call or email and we can help you as best we can.

Additionally, we will schedule a Zoom meeting 8 – 10 weeks prior to the start of our workshop. There, you can meet your fellow workshop participants, ask any questions before traveling, receive insights and recommendations for reference books, and much more.

Typical Travel Itinerary

When photographing wildlife and nature, the key is to remain flexible and open to adjustments in order to maximize our daily itinerary as needed to observe the behavior of the wildlife and lighting conditions.

An example workshop itinerary is as follows:

Day 1: June 2, 2027

Arrival into Quito, Ecuador

Arrive into the capital of Ecuador at anytime on this day. The group will meet for an optional group dinner to kick off the adventure together.

Day 2: June 3, 2027

Venturing into The Amazon

After an early breakfast, we set out for our lodge situated deep in Ecuador’s Amazon River Basin. Firstly, we take a short flight over the Andes to the small town of Coca. There, we board a variety of boats for the few hour voyage up river. Finally, a team of canoes awaits us at a junction in the river, where we make the final push deep into a remote nature lodge situated on a breathtaking lagoon. The tannin-rich waters provide ample opportunity for reflection shots of your waterfront cabin.

We will unpack and settle in to 4 nights of relaxation and wilderness adventures. People can be on the lookout for wildlife shots right from our rooms and main lodge.

We will set out on our first wildlife outing in the afternoon on this day, then return home after sundown for a group dinner. Guests are invited to rest early ahead of our early morning sunrise shoots the next few days.

Day 3 – 6: June 4 – 7, 2027

Full Days Exploring Yasuni by Boat and Trail

We have organized a very comprehensive 4-day schedule of outings scouting for a myriad of wildlife. Depending on the conditions and local reports, we may opt for morning river cruises, evening birding sessions from the treetop viewing platforms, an early afternoon hike, and so on.

Every night, the group ends the day with communal dinners. Participants are also encouraged to engage in editing sessions, gear discussions, and more.

Day 7: June 8, 2027

Pitstop in Quito

On Day 7, we depart our lodge very early and return to the capital of Ecuador for an evening of rest ahead of an early morning departure the next day. On the evening of June 8, clients can enjoy dinner with the group, or an alternate dinner plan can be arranged in Quito.

Day 8: June 9, 2027

Exploring Zuro Loma

On this day, we start the tour driving just 90 minutes out of Quito to Zuro Loma Reserve. This are is said to be the “soul of Ecuador’s Cloud Forest”, and an excellent location to get our first sights of the birds of the region. We hope to see an assortment of hummingbirds like the Sword-billed, Mountain Velvetbreast, Collared Inca, and Sapphire-vented Puffleg, as well as Andean Guan, Masked and Glossy Flowerpiercers, Yellow-breasted Brushfinch, and Blue-capped Tanager, Red-crested Cotinga, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, and Black-crested Warbler.

In the evening, we arrive at our lodging for the next 3 nights, the Tandayapa Bird Lodge. This gorgeous lodge is set within rich subtropical forest in the Andes of western Ecuador. Birds like the White-booted Racket-tail, Violet-tailed Sylph, Purple-bibbed White-tip, Purple-throated Woodstar, Buff-tailed Coronet, Brown Inca, and a variety of toucanets and tanagers can be observed up-close on the property.

Day 9: June 10, 2027

Exploring Mindo Forest Reserve

On Day 9, early risers can photograph Slate-throated Redstart, Toucan Barbet, Golden-bellied Flycatcher, and heaps of hummingbird species frequently found on the property in the early morning hours.

We then make our way to a premier hummingbird location to practice this enticing style of wildlife portraiture, the world-famous Birdwatcher’s House. This location hosts two bird blinds that blend within the surrounding native forests, as well as beautiful native and non-native gardens for innumerable photo opportunities. Other birds to be seen here are the Turquoise Jay, Masked Trogon, and Risky Chlorospingus can be seen here.

We enjoy an action-packed day here, and return to our lodge for another relaxing evening of great conversations and helpful editing sessions.

Day 10: June 11, 2027

Exploring San Tadeo

On this day, the group makes their way to San Tadeo, a beautiful tanager and hummingbird garden owned by Rolando, member of the local community who has worked very hard to transform this area as a birding epicenter.

There are some very interesting and regionally-specific species to be watched here like the Beryl Spangled Tanager, and Black Capped Tanager, to name a few.

Lastly, in the afternoon, we patron a specialized location to photograph the Andean Cock-of-the-rock.

Day 11: June 12, 2027

Departure Home

On this final day of the workshop, our group will have one more breakfast together, and then drive back to Quito.
