The Guardians of the Rainforest
Journey with us deep into the lush, ancient rainforests of Indonesia in search of the largest tree-dwelling animal on earth, the orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus).
In the Malay language, orang means “person” and utan is means “forest.” Thus, orangutan translates to “person of the forest“. These great apes have a mythical air to them, as they solitarily and stoically move through the Bornean jungle. Yet, their silent presence isn’t something to underestimate. They are powerful, with a nearly 2 meter long arm span and tremendous strength to suspend themselves in the canopy as they collect fruits, eggs, and leaves, though they can also be spotted foraging on the forest floor collecting seeds, flowers, sap, and insects.
Orangutans are extremely intelligent creatures, and, with luck, we may observe fascinating behaviors like nest-building or tool use to fulfil their daily needs. This means our dynamic wildlife excursion will take us to a variety of settings, from dense forest to winding waterways. Certain workshop outings are boat-based, while others are jungle hikes or optional nighttime photo walks. A certain degree of physical stamina is required for this trip, and the ability to comfortably walk on uneven terrain for up to 3 miles is required.
This remote island is home to other species like proboscis monkeys, gibbons, macaques, Colugos flying lemurs, Bornean pygmy elephants, saltwater crocodiles, smooth-coated otters, Bornean bearded pigs, Rhinoceros hornbills, Bornean bristleheads, green magpies, giant pittas, banded pittas, kingfishers, bee-eaters, flycatchers, storks, cuckoos, and so much more.
Or workshop not only focuses on photographing the wildlife on the island, but also educating group members on the crucial conservation efforts to rebuild the critically endangered orangutan population. Beyond orangutans solitary lifestyle and extremely slow reproduction rate (typically birthing one baby every 5 or so years, and raising that baby for up to 4 years), human pressures like deforestation, palm oil production, and poaching pose a serious threat to the species’ survival.
We are proud to partner with the most ethical wildlife experts in the region. Our team provides unparalleled attention to detail and commitment to preserving the natural environment while offering a comprehensive nature experience you will never forget. Each photo locations have been strategically and ethically chosen to get us as close to truly wild orangutans as possible.
Our accommodations are selected for their quality, atmosphere, and secluded locations, positioning our group as close as possible to our wildlife subjects while maintaining a level of comfort throughout the trip.
For 11 days of photo outings, our small group enjoys unique opportunities to create the dream shot of these gorgeous primates in their natural habitat, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the 3rd largest island in the world. Not only will wildlife photographers rejoice at the epic photo opportunities in Borneo, but so will macro, landscape, cultural, and perhaps even astrophotography enthusiasts.
Throughout this excursion, you will be instructed in-the-field how to compose compelling images, work with the weather and lighting conditions to take full advantage of the environment, and master the technical aspects of photography. Whether you’re a beginner photographer or a seasoned pro, our experienced instructors will provide personalized instruction and guidance to help you improve your skills and take your wildlife and landscape photography to the next level.
This workshop offers hands on instruction to best hone in your images and streamline your creative visions, as well as image reviews and editing sessions to continue practicing skills and techniques learned on the workshop once you’ve returned home.
We believe in order to truly enjoy your experience, and to receive the most out of an adventure photography workshop, we must maintain small group sizes with a very high ratio of instructors to participants. We’ve limited this workshop to a maximum of 8 participants and 2 instructors so there is no unnecessary crowding at a sighting.
This is a unique educational excursion, and by capping the group size, despite immense interest from our clients, our team ensures everyone gets the attention and one-on-one instruction they need to make once in a lifetime images.
Our workshops are distinctive in that they’re fully inclusive– your tuition cost covers all expenses from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart Indonesia. We provide our guests the best possible accommodations, dining options, and unique educational opportunities in the region.
As workshop leaders, we take your trust in our expertise very seriously. We work in tandem with the respective National Park Service of any photo locations, and always operate under the proper insurance, permits, and certifications.
You will be accompanied by Juan Pons, Jaclyn Merica, and a local wildlife expert during this workshop. Juan is an accomplished professional wildlife and travel photographer and photographic educator who has a deep passion for the outdoors and wildlife conservation. Jaclyn is Juan’s assistant, co-leading outdoor workshops in places like Yellowstone, Chile, the Himalayas, Botswana, Alaska, and more.
Juan and his team believe the best way to teach is by demonstrating, and to this end, we will be shooting alongside you, showing you our technique, and sharing our love and knowledge of wildlife and the landscape. However, our priority is always YOU, and assisting you to get the best images YOU can get.
The biggest advantage of having small groups is the flexibility they provide for customizing and adjusting our schedule to accommodate the interests of the group as a whole. This allows us to cover only those topics that you are all interested in, including:
• Techniques for creating exciting and captivating wildlife images
• Best use of your equipment
• Post-processing demos to enhance the quality of your images
• Image reviews
Our workshops are fairly intensive experiences, and as such, you should not expect this to be a leisurely vacation. Our goal is to capture the best images we can during our time in this remarkable location. This means there will be days we begin very early and return to our lodging very late. However, we will always have breaks and lunch rest hours.
You should expect to receive important instructions from our team with details to secure your flights 8 months prior to the workshop. We request you do not book your flights to and from Indonesia until you receive explicit instructions from us.
Then, about 2-3 months prior to the workshop, you will start hearing from our team on a regular basis. We will provide you with a Participant Info Packet with all relevant details, as well as go over more details to get you inspired and thinking about the images you want to capture during the workshop. These provided documents will list all recommended clothing, equipment, and even discounts for gear you may want to acquire for this excursion.
Juan and Jaclyn are always available to answer any questions you may have leading up to the excursion- simply call or email and we can help you as best we can.
Additionally, we will schedule a Zoom meeting 8 – 10 weeks prior to the start of our workshop. There, you can meet your fellow workshop participants, ask any questions before traveling, receive insights and recommendations for reference books, and much more.
Tuition for the workshop is $12,995.00 USD per person, and this includes single room accommodation for the entirety of the workshop.
If you would like to reserve your spot on this workshop, you can do so with a $5,995.00 USD deposit. The final balance of the workshop fee ($7,000.00 USD), is due 6 months prior to the first day of the workshop.

When photographing wildlife and nature, the key is to remain flexible and open to adjustments in order to maximize wildlife opportunities and conditions.
Please keep in mind this is a sample itinerary and is subject to adjustments. Our team is completing our scouting trip in October 2025, and will finalize our itinerary based on our insights from our scouting trip.
Day 1: Arrival to Indonesia
Clients will arrive into Jakarta, Indonesia (Airport code CGK) anytime on this day. Our team has coordinated private airport pick ups, and your photo guides will be awaiting your arrival. Our group will convene at the same hotel, overnight, and set off together on Day 2 to officially kick off our excursion.
Each night, we stay in the highest quality lodging possible and enjoy samplings of local cuisines.
Day 2-10: Exploration Through Borneo
On Day 2, we begin our exploration of the island, and we will see a multitude of areas over the 11 days of the trip.
During our workshop, we work closely with expert trackers in different national parks and nature sanctuaries to provide the most comprehensive excursion possible. Potential locations include Sepilok, Semenggoh and Kinabatangan, the mangroves in Bako National Park, and the expansive forests of Danum Valley.
When we are not photographing orangutans, we have many other natural subjects to focus on. Environments found in Indonesia are globally recognized as some of the richest and most complex on Earth. Borneo alone has roughly 10,000 to 15,000 species of flowering plants (like trees, palms, orchids, and ferns), with nearly 6,000 of these plant species being endemic.
In the evenings, clients can opt to join editing sessions with the instructors and group members or retire to their rooms and rest.
Day 12: Departure from Indonesia
This journey has come to an end and group members are free to travel back home or fly to other destinations in the region. Guests can opt to fly out of Juanda Surabaya, Indonesia (Airport code SUB) on this date.
