Big Cats, Even Bigger Mountains

Journey deep into the world’s highest mountain range for an epic excursion to photograph the apex predator of the majestic Himalayas, the elusive snow leopard. This destination is on any adventurer’s bucket list, or, at the very least, it should be.

When you say “The Himalayas”, many images come to mind, like the region’s staggering peaks, deeply rooted Buddhist culture, rich biodiversity, and, perhaps, the formidable wildlife adapted to high elevations and equally high stakes for survival.

This remote and rugged land is home to species like yak, blue sheep, Asiatic ibex, red fox, Tibetan wolf, stone marten, marmot, hare, pika, and, most notably, high concentrations of snow leopard (Panthera uncia).

Himalayan snow leopards are locally named the “Ghosts of the Mountains”, their silent presence is revered across the icy wilderness of South Asia.

Snow leopards thrive solitarily amid the rocky terrain of the high Himalayas, most often spotted at dawn and dusk during their hunting times, stalking unsuspecting prey in the extreme elevations and cold temperatures.

We are proud to partner with the best expert trackers in the region to provide unparalleled attention to detail and commitment to preserving the natural environment while offering a comprehensive wildlife experience you will never forget.

For 7 days of photo outings, our small group enjoys unique opportunities to create the dream shot of these big cats camoflouged in their natural habitat, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of north India. Our group has the distinct honor to connect with locals dedicating their lives to preserving the snow leopard population through education, advocacy, and ecotourism.

During the workshop, our group’s home base is in the world’s highest elevation village accessible to vehicles, sitting at just over 14,000 feet (4270 meters) with roughly only 400 local residents. The settlement positioned high above the sacred Buddhist lands of Spiti Valley and Kye Monastery, and a walk around our quaint village built atop a rocky hill is a must to take in the panoramic views of the mountains we’ve traveled so far to see.

Not only will wildlife photographers rejoice at the epic photo opportunities on this trip, but so will landscape, cultural, portrait, and astrophotography enthusiasts.

This trip is labeled as rigorous, and physical stamina is required to attend. The terrain will be challenging and hiking for prolonged periods at this high elevation is largely unfamiliar to most people. Some snow leopard sightings may not require much walking, with luck, but there is the potential we could hike up to 5 miles in a day, and at such a high elevation, and in such cold temperatures, it’s important to consider your abilities in such extreme conditions. Porters will be hired to assist in carrying gear on our daily outings, but you have the personal responsibility to hike those miles under your own power. Hired yak transport may be available to assist you in a particularly challenging situation, but these services can charge a high fee per day and should be left for emergencies only.

Additionally, this trip is unique in that the remote location severely limits our team’s ability to offer amenities at the standard our clients have come to expect from us. Very basic accommodation is offered in Kibber, including a room with a table, bed, and private bathroom facility. Our lodging has electricity and serves 3 meals a day of wholesome cuisine, typically either Indian or Tibetan. However, the extremely high altitude and cold weather make running water unfeasible. Each day, you have access to warm water in wash basins to maintain a comfortable level of personal hygiene. Around day 4 of the excursion, individuals have the option to drive to a lower elevation village, where they will have access to hot showers.

Despite the unique quirks of this destination, we’ve purposely selected this location to maximize our opportunities and make best use of our time to spot snow leopards, and during the best season to increase our chances of capturing some stellar wildlife activities.

Throughout this excursion, you will be instructed in-the-field how to compose compelling images, work with the weather and lighting conditions to take full advantage of the environment, and master the technical aspects of photography. Whether you’re a beginner photographer or a seasoned pro, our experienced instructors will provide personalized instruction and guidance to help you improve your skills and take your wildlife and landscape photography to the next level.

This workshop offers hands on instruction to best hone in your images and streamline your creative visions, as well as image reviews and editing sessions to continue practicing skills and techniques learned on the workshop once you’ve returned home.

What Sets my workshops apart

I believe in order to truly enjoy your experience, and to receive the most out of an adventure photography workshop, I must maintain small group sizes with a very high ratio of instructors to participants. I’ve limited this workshop to a maximum of 8 participants and 2 instructors so there is no unnecessary crowding at a sighting.

This is a unique educational excursion, and by capping the group size, despite immense interest from our clients, our team ensures everyone gets the attention and one-on-one instruction they need to make once in a lifetime images.

My workshops are distinctive in that they’re fully inclusive– your tuition cost covers all expenses from the moment you arrive to the moment you depart Chandigarh, India. We provide our guests the best possible accommodations, dining options, and unique educational opportunities in the region.

As workshop leaders, my team and I take your trust in our expertise very seriously. We work in tandem with the respective National Park Service of any photo locations, and always operate under the proper insurance, permits, and certifications.

What you will learn

You will be accompanied by Juan Pons and a local wildlife expert during this workshop. Juan is an accomplished professional wildlife and travel photographer and photographic educator who has a deep passion for the outdoors and wildlife conservation.

Juan and his team believe the best way to teach is by demonstrating, and to this end, we will be shooting alongside you, showing you our technique, and sharing our love and knowledge of wildlife and the landscape. However, our priority is always YOU, and assisting you to get the best images YOU can get.

The biggest advantage of having small groups is the flexibility they provide for customizing and adjusting our schedule to accommodate both to the unpredictable weather and the interests of the group as a whole. This allows us to cover only those topics that you are all interested in, including:

• Techniques for creating exciting and captivating wildlife images

• Best use of your equipment

• Post-processing demos to enhance the quality of your images

• Image reviews

What to expect

My workshops are fairly intensive experiences, and as such, you should not expect this to be a leisurely vacation. My goal is to capture the best images we can during our time in this remarkable location. This means there will be days we begin very early and return to our lodging very late. However, we will always have breaks and lunch rest hours.

On this workshop, you will fly into and depart from Chandigarh, India (Airport code IXC). You should expect to receive important instructions from my team with details to secure your flights 6 months prior to the workshop.

Then, about 2-3 months prior to the workshop, you will start hearing from me and my team on a regular basis. I will provide you with a Participant Info Packet with all relevant details, as well as go over more details to get you inspired and thinking about the images you want to capture during the workshop. These provided documents will list all recommended clothing, equipment, and even discounts for gear you may want to acquire for this excursion.

Pre-departure group zoom conference

My assistant, Jaclyn, and I are always available to answer any questions you may have leading up to the excursion- simply call or email and we can help you as best we can.

Additionally, we will schedule a Zoom meeting 8 – 10 weeks prior to the start of our workshop. There, you can meet your fellow workshop participants, ask any questions before traveling, receive insights and recommendations for reference books, and much more.

Tuition

Tuition for the workshop is $10,595.00 USD for double occupancy per person.

If you would like to enjoy private accommodation during the workshop, that can be arranged for an additional supplement of $1,300.00 USD.

Typical Travel Itinerary

When photographing wildlife and nature, the key is to remain flexible and open to adjustments in order to maximize our daily itinerary as needed to observe the behavior of the wildlife and lighting conditions.

Please keep in mind that this is a sample itinerary and is subject to alterations:

Day 1: Arrival to Chandigarh, India

Clients will arrive into Chandigarh, India (Airport code IXC) anytime on this day. Most international connections route through New Delhi (Airport code DEL) or Mumbai (Airport code BOM).

Our team has coordinated private airport pick up to an area hotel, and your photo guides will be awaiting your arrival. Chandigarh is the nearest big city to our snow leopard destination. Guest will check into the provided accommodations and enjoy a restful evening before the road trip kicks off the next day!

Day 2-3: Multi-Day Travel to Kibber, India

Everything about this workshop is quite extreme, even the effort to get to our starting location is an extreme experience.

Over the first 2 days of the trip, our group works its way from Chandigarh to Kibber, the highest village accessible to vehicles in the world. That’s right, it takes over 2 days of driving just to access the starting point of our wildlife adventure- truly emphasizing just how remote and vast this destination is. These travel days are useful, though, helping folks acclimatize to the region, and it’s crucial to utilize these days to hydrate and ease your body into these high altitude conditions.

Each night, we stay in the highest quality lodging possible and enjoy the local cuisines. However, please note, after Day 2, none of our lodgings offer WIFI, but there are some cellular roaming options, and both instructors will carry Garmin InReach devices for any emergencies.

Day 4 – 10: Exploring The Far Reaches of the Himalayas

On the morning of Day 4, we say goodbye to hot showers and other creature comforts and make the final push to Kibber, where our snow leopard excursion officially begins!

During the next 7 days, we work with our expert trackers to pursue snow leopard sightings during morning and afternoon photo excursions. We commence the day with coffee and tea before our pre-dawn departure to the snow leopard sightings. We return for a late breakfast/early lunch, rest, edit, and then start again on an afternoon photo excursion until sundown.

In the evenings, clients can opt to join editing sessions and image reviews with the instructors and group members, go for village walks, or retire to their rooms and rest while taking in the serene mountain surroundings.

During this day 4 – day 10 timeframe is when an outing to a lower elevation village to access hot showers is offered.

Day 11 – 12: Journey Back To Chandigarh

After one final morning session, the group packs up their vehicles and retraces their steps back toward civilization.

Day 13: Departure from Chandigarh This journey has come to an end and group members are free to travel back home or fly to other destinations in the region. Guests can opt to fly out of Chandigarh anytime on this date.
